About Biara Martin
Artist Statement
My name is Biara Martin, and I am an Indigenous artist based in Perth, Western Australia. I come from a strong lineage of the Balladong, Binjareb, Widi, Ballaruk, and Budimia tribes. My traditional lands extend across the Perth Metropolitan region, the Southwest of Western Australia, and into the Mid-West, shaping both my identity and artistic practice.
From an early age, I was immersed in art through the influence of my grandmothers, Joan Martin and Theresa Walley, whose painting practices left a lasting impression on me. Observing their work and creative processes fostered a deep appreciation for art as a medium of storytelling, cultural preservation, and connection to Country. Their guidance continues to inform my artistic style, which draws from both sides of my family heritage.
Throughout my schooling years, I developed a strong passion for art, which I was fortunate to cultivate and refine. My practice brings together traditional Dreaming stories and contemporary interpretations of landscape, often highlighting native flora and fauna. These works reflect Dreamtime narratives passed down by my family elders and are grounded in cultural knowledge and lived experience.
In response to an evolving contemporary world, I have adapted my practice to include modern techniques and technologies while remaining respectful of tradition. I primarily work with acrylic on canvas and digital media, allowing flexibility and innovation in the way stories are shared.
In addition to my artistic practice, I facilitate workshops that focus on collaboration, cultural heritage, and storytelling. Through these workshops, I aim to foster understanding, connection, and respect for Indigenous culture.
It is a privilege to pursue my passion through art, storytelling, and cultural practice. I am grateful for the opportunity to share knowledge, celebrate culture, and contribute to the continuation of stories that have been carried for generations.
